Vegetable prices surge across Moroccan markets

The rise in prices has sparked concerns among consumers, highlighting the ongoing challenges in balancing local demand with external factors like weather and international trade.
Vegetable prices have noticeably risen across Morocco in the past week, with significant increases observed in Casablanca’s markets. A recent survey revealed that essential vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, and bell peppers have seen sharp price hikes.
Tomatoes, for instance, are now priced at 10 dirhams per kilogram (approximately $1), with prices exceeding that amount in some upscale markets in Casablanca. Potatoes have climbed to 7 dirhams per kilogram (around $0.70), while bell peppers are selling at 8 dirhams (about $0.80). Meanwhile, onions and eggplants are priced at 6 dirhams each (roughly $0.60), and carrots have remained steady at 6 dirhams per kilogram (approximately $0.60).
One wholesale market vendor in Casablanca explained that this sudden rise in prices follows a period of stability and is largely due to two main factors: a cold wave currently affecting Morocco and increased exports. These elements have impacted the availability and cost of vegetables across local markets.
