Remarkable growth for New Carrot Ispica IGP
FJ
The young Consortium Carota Novella Ispica PGI brings together a dozen small and medium producers in the southern Sicily (Ragusa, Siracusa, Agrigento, Catania).
Within the framework of the Consortium, born in 2010, producer members cultivate carrots on about 1,500 hectares, with the goal of reaching 30% of production marketed under the IGP label. The initial production totaled 400 tons, but that of the last year (2012-13 season) increased by +84% passing from 700 tons, production this year is likely to reach 1,000 tons, according to the latest estimates.
Carrot Ispica is remarkable at more than a title. Sowing is done in the fall and the harvest is carried out from 20 February to 15 June. To avoid exhaustion of the soil, crop rotation is done over 3 years, the production is not biological but integrated against pests. Drilling of 150 to 300 meters underground will look pure and mineral-rich water for irrigation. Finally the sun and the climate of Sicily round off the benefits of this unique carrot, an intense orange color, subtle flavor, crisp and tasty.
