76 avocado producing properties of Antioquia will obtain GlobalG.A.P certification
In Colombia, the Government of the Antioquia department chose 76 rural properties to certify them in GlobalG.A.P, so that small producers could enter world markets, since the GlobalG.A.P. certifies companies in food safety.
This initiative was carried out in agreement with the Colombian Agricultural Research Corporation - Agrosavia, within the framework of the Agro Antioquia Exporta 4.0 project, which aims to expand Antioquia's exportable offer.
To obtain the GlobalG.A.P. certification producers have to fulfill 3 main conditions: protect the environment, guarantee the safety of the fruit and ensure the well-being of the workers. In addition, there are 222 requirements to comply with. Among them: training, laboratory analysis, procedures and documentation of risk assessments and general documents of the farm. The Government and Agrosavia provided advice and support to comply with the requirements.
This certification will help producers increase value of their avocados, achieve recognition in the markets and focus on continuous improvement in what is related to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), according to Juan Mauricio Rojas Acosta, the director of the Research Center La Selva of Agrosavia.
The largest farm that will obtain certification has 17 hectares, which means, according to Agrosavia, that this is the most important support received to date by small and medium-sized avocado producers in Antioquia.
The producers of Hass avocado, which before the end of 2021 will obtain their Global G.A.P. certification for export, are located in the municipalities of Jericó, Jardín, Urrao, Sonsón, El Retiro, San Vicente Ferrer, Abejorral, La Ceja, El Peñol, El Santuario, Marinilla and Rionegro.
