A tomato harvest between 600 and 650 thousands tons is forecast for the present campaign in Morocco, on pair levels with the previous campaign (source: Tomatoes Today). Exports to EU (which is the key destination market) have increased by 24% in the first two weeks of October, amounting 7,000 tons, according to a note released by the Spanish ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). 80% of all the tomatoes exported are cultivated in greenhouses, which cover a total area of 500 hectares. Open field crops are traditionally used for processed tomatoes.
The 2006/2007 tomato campaign was very satisfactory for Morocco: a total volume of 297,249 tons were exported from October to June, with an increase of 23% compared to the same period 2005/2006.
