A record crop but 1/4 of the harvest will not be collected.
Brazil, the largest exporter of orange juice with 85% of the world market, is facing a difficult situation.
The next harvest is estimated at 364 million boxes, but there will be no room for treatment. Stocks will reach 560,000 tons, with an upper limit of 825,000 tons.
Citrus BR the National Association of Exporters of orange juice, estimated that a quarter
of the harvest 2012/2013, equivalent to 83 million boxes of 40.8 kilos of oranges, will not be collected.
The surplus of oranges has become a chronic problem in Brazil for the last 10 years due to a drop in consumption. Around the world orange juice has lost market share in favour of flavuored waters, energy drinks or other fruit juices.
