Usually imports of apples are banned 9 months / year but Switzerland allows them this year right now.
Because of a small national harvest, Swiss apple stocks are low, so the Federal Office of Agriculture has approved an import quota of 8,000 tonnes until the end of April.
"This is an extraordinary solution to an extraordinary situation," says Marc Wermelinger, Director of Swisscofel. Usually imports of apples are allowed only between mid-June and mid-August but this year the local supply is too low. The authorized quota of 8 000 tonnes of imported apples is valid until the end of April.
From May, the Swiss borders will be completely open to foreign apples.
