Rewe authorized to acquire 75% of Adeg

The only condition that the Commission arises is that Rewe could close some of its Austrian subsidiaries, although their number has not been clarified yet. Brussels has placed this condition to prevent a competition reduction with a consequent increase in prices.
Through Adeg´s acquisition, Rewe - which works with Merkur, Billa, Penny and Bipa chains - will come to control a 36% of the market - and a 50% in Vienna.
In 2007 the Rewe had 1,390 supermarkets with a total of 33,887 employees and a turnover of 4.87 billion euros, while the Adeg had 2,500 employees and 730 shops, with a turnover of 1.1 billion euros.
