In 2022, high energy prices and the various measures taken by greenhouse growers had a significant impact on the sector's energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
A study by Wageningen Economic Research reveals that by 2022 in the Netherlands, energy consumption in the greenhouse horticulture sector will have fallen significantly (-27%), as will the sector's CO2 emissions (-25%). This is mainly due to much lower energy consumption per m2, averaging 0.8 GJ/m2 (-29%).
According to the study, in the face of high energy prices, greenhouse growers have taken a number of measures that have resulted in additional energy savings, such as adjusting cultivation and production strategy, investing in LED lighting in particular, optimizing the flexibility of energy sources and negotiating on energy markets.
By 2022, according to the study, total CO2 emissions from greenhouse horticulture had reached 4.9 Mtonnes, a reduction of almost 1.7 Mtonnes compared with 2021.
