The Indian central government had taken the decision in December 2023 to ban onion exports until March 31, 2024, then extended the ban indefinitely.
According to local media, 'onion diplomacy' is in place. Since the ban, onion exports have been carried out through government-to-government transactions and on the recommendation of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) said that authorizations had been granted for the export of a further 10,000 tons of onions to the United Arab Emirates, in addition to the 14,400 tons authorized on March 1; 10,000 tons of onions to Sri Lanka; 50,000 tons of onions to Bangladesh; 550 tons to Bhutan; 3,000 tons to Bahrain and 1,200 tons to Mauritius.
