Andalusia is one of the biggest producing regions of citrus in Spain. In the 2020/2021 campaign its production has exceeded 2.3 million tons, which means an increase of 7% compared to the previous year, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Board of Andalusia.
The growth is explained by the rise in production of sweet orange (+8.6%) and lemon (+6.9%). The mandarin maintains the same production volumes as in 2019-2020 (+0.5%).
In this campaign, oranges accounted for 73.3% of the total production of citrus fruits in Andalusia, exceeding 1.7 million tons.
The mandarin concentrated 20% of the total, reaching 467,500 tons.
Lemons accounted for 5.1% (118,350 tons).
Grapefruit, bitter orange and other minority citrus fruits totaled 38.400 tons.
Seville concentrated more than 44% of the total production of citrus fruits in Andalusia, followed by Huelva (23%), Córdoba (15%) and Almería (8.5%). The province of Malaga accounts for 6% of the region's production, Cádiz 2.5% and Granada 0.4%.
The analysis of the campaign is based on data presented by 23 Andalusian Fruit and Vegetable Producers Organizations (OPFH) that represent 15.8% (12,900 hectares) of the citrus fruit production area of that autonomous region.
