The Association continues to promote the consumption of the vegetable, informing about its benefits and nutritional properties that strengthen the immune system and prevent various diseases. The consumption of green asparagus has a very significant influence on the economy of more than 20 towns in Granada, where this crop is the main source of income throughout the season.

Granada is the leading province of Spain in production of green asparagus. The sector is led by 15 cooperatives aiming to achieve the highest quality product and a solid market in Europe.

The harvesting campaign began at the beginning of March and is developing with a slightly lower production than in 2020, due to the abrupt changes in temperature in recent weeks.

This campaign will count with a product of good quality and an increase in the offer between 5-10%, according to Antonio Zamora, the president of the Spanish Green Asparagus Interprofessional Association.

The campaign lasts four months, during which Granada produces around 33.000 tons of green asparagus (according to 2020 data), it is 67% of the total produced in Andalusia and more than half of the green asparagus produced in the country.

The product is mainly destined abroad (80%), especially towards Germany, Switzerland and France. Domestic demand is booming, although in 2020 it experienced a significant decline due to the closure of the HoReCa channel due to the pandemic.

Throughout the year, the cooperatives in the field are developing new varieties, and they also start cultivating in greenhouses to optimize the harvest of the plantations. Throughout the production chain, from the field to the facilities and packaging, they follow environmentally friendly methods, thus guaranteeing the sustainability and traceability of a green asparagus with healthy properties.

The Association and the cooperatives in the sector are working to improve the competitiveness of the vegetable.

Antonio Zamora is confident that the creation of the Green Asparagus Interprofessional Association, a project that already has the support of producers and representative organizations of the Andalusian sector and other autonomous communities such as Castilla la Mancha and Extremadura, will help strengthen the marketing of the product, the quality and to defend its competitiveness in the market, in a context of competition with third countries.
