India sends Banganapalle mangoes to Singapore by sea for first time

A cheaper logistics route could help Indian mangoes travel farther without losing quality.
India has completed its first commercial sea shipment of premium Banganapalle mangoes to Singapore, according to India’s Press Information Bureau.
The 5-metric-tonne consignment was shipped on June 11, 2026, and reached Singapore on June 24. The mangoes came from GAP-certified orchards in Andhra Pradesh and were packed at an approved packhouse in Karnataka.
The shipment met Singapore’s quality and phytosanitary requirements. On arrival, the fruit was reported to have good sweetness, uniform ripening, shelf life and overall condition.
The export also brought better returns for farmers. While Banganapalle mangoes were selling in the domestic market for ₹25–26 per kg ($0.26–$0.27), the export shipment realised about ₹50 per kg ($0.53), almost double the local price.
The trial is important because sea freight can reduce costs compared with air transport and make larger fruit shipments more commercially viable. With proper cold-chain handling and post-harvest management, maritime transport could help India expand fresh fruit exports to more distant markets.
Banganapalle mangoes are known for their golden-yellow colour, sweet taste, pleasant aroma and fibreless pulp. Stronger sea logistics could give the variety a wider role in India’s mango export trade.
