Dominican Republic: areas of banana cultivation flooded
Dominica
Friday 20 February 2009
Torrent rains in north-west part of Dominican Republic made fatal floods which destroyed big areas of banana cultivation.
Generally speaking almost 3000 hectares of banana plantations were damaged or totally destroyed.
Recently in this part of Dominican Republic organic banana was cultivated and until now isn’t known the scale of losses.
Apart from banana plantations, the areas where melons and vegetables are cultivated can be threatened by hurricanes raging over the Caribbean Islands.
