What to expect from tomato harvest in the Northern Hemisphere
VU
According to a recently released crop update by the World Processing Tomato Council (WPTC), there is a variety of concerns regarding tomato production in the Northern Hemisphere.
Egypt: The peak summer season is in full swing, with processing operations running at full capacity. Positive reports have been received regarding quality and yield.
France: Although weather conditions have improved, late blight and bacteriosis remain challenges due to frequent rainfall. The forecast for France has been revised to approximately 150,000 tons, down from the initial estimate of 160,000 tons. Harvest is expected in late July in the South-East and early August in the South-West.
Italy: Transplanting operations have been completed in the North, benefiting from favorable weather conditions. However, there have been delays in planting in the South. Concerns exist about the harvest due to the potential for volatile weather in September.
Portugal: The country has experienced favorable weather conditions, but there are concerns regarding high humidity and the possibility of mildew. The harvest is scheduled to begin in the second half of July.
Spain: Similar weather conditions to Portugal, including high temperatures that may impact flowering. The harvest is expected to commence in Extremadura around July 20 - 25, with slightly earlier start dates in Andalusia.
Turkey: The weather has improved after periods of rain, and the crop is developing well. The harvest is anticipated to be delayed, with the southern region expected to start at the end of July.
Overall, the production forecast remains relatively unchanged from the WPTC's June update, indicating a total volume of 42.5 million tons. However, some market sources dispute this estimate, suggesting that the projected volume may not be reached. The tomato industry will continue to monitor the situation as the harvest progresses.
