The latest trade figures reflect Morocco’s growing dominance in Europe’s agricultural supply chain.
In 2024, Morocco became Spain’s top pepper supplier by a wide margin, exporting 101.11 million kilos of peppers and accounting for over 92% of Spain’s total pepper imports. This marks a dramatic 199.9% increase from 2015, when Morocco shipped just 33.71 million kilos to the Spanish market.
Data from Spain’s ICEX and Tax Agency shows that the value of Moroccan pepper exports to Spain reached €121.46 million (around $131.18 million) last year, with an average price of €1.20 ($1.30) per kilo.
Spain’s total pepper imports have nearly tripled over the past decade, rising from 37.64 million kilos in 2015 to 109.47 million kilos in 2024. While Morocco led by far, Portugal and France followed with significantly lower volumes — 2.84 million and 2.08 million kilos, respectively.
Despite the surge in imports, Spain remains one of the world’s leading pepper exporters. In 2024, it shipped out 844.62 million kilos, mainly to Germany, France, and the UK. Meanwhile, other suppliers also gained ground in the Spanish market, with Portugal increasing its exports to Spain by nearly 500%, and France by 32% over the past ten years.
