South Africa plants 6% of the world's potatoes and has 52 000 hectares under potatoes and produces 1,7 million tonne of potatoes per year.
The most popular varieties grown in southern tip of Africa are: Eryn, Mnanadi, Ropedi, Rotaro, Aviva and Baroc. There two crops of potatoes are planted all year round.
The South African potato industry has a sophisticated seed potato industry which plays a vital role in the growth of the ware potato and processing industries.
