The state of Michoacán represents 94% of the total blackberry harvest in Mexico. The production of this fruit increased by almost 9% in the first four months of 2022, totaling 96.596.42 tons, according to local media.
The improvement of cultivation techniques resulted in higher and better yields, in terms of quality, volume and price, according to the Ministry of Rural and Agrifood Development (Sader).
The Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) reported that this year 8.929 hectares were allocated to blackberries production, of which approximately 8.100 have already yielded, with approximately 11.80 tons per hectare, one ton more than at the beginning of 2021.
The blackberry is grown in 25 municipalities in the state of Michoacán, although the largest volume of production is provided by a dozen of them.
Los Reyes is the largest producer within the state, which between January and April reported over 38.700 tons; followed by Peribán, with almost 26.000 tons in the same term. These two demarcations together harvest 67% percent of the total production of the berry in the entity.
Tacámbaro is the other important producer, with 9.500 tons cultivated during the said period, followed by Tocumbo (6.000 tons) and Ario (3.625 tons).
About 15.000 tons of blackberries are exported each year, with the main destinations being the United States, England, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands.
