World citrus production stands at 158.5 million tons

WCO (World Citrus Organisation) has announced the availability, for WCO members only, of its "World Citrus Statistics". This publication is part of the 2022-2024 strategy to share citrus information to foster global collaboration.
This 52-page publication, conducted in cooperation with CIRAD, presents detailed citrus statistical data for the 2021 summer and 2021-22 winter seasons on production, exports, imports and consumption for all citrus fruits. .
The publication reveals that the world's citrus production stands at 158.5 million tons, with China, Brazil, India and Mexico leading the way as the main producing countries in 2021. About 51% of citrus fruits are produced in Asia.
Around 52% of citrus exports (7.2 million tonnes) come from the Mediterranean region, mainly from Spain, Turkey and Egypt, as well as South Africa.
The volume of imports remains relatively stable and the main import markets are Europe, the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland. This is reflected in consumption, with Scandinavia (14.5 kg), followed by France (13.5 kg) and Germany (12.8 kg) showing the highest citrus consumption per capita in 2021.
