Madagascar has exported nearly 17 000 tonnes of lychees on a total production estimated at 100 000 tonnes. Volume which positions the country in the 3rd in the world.
Madagascar is the world's 3rd largest litchi producer after China and India, with nearly 100 000 tonnes produced each year.
The lychee harvesting campaign started in November (week 47) and will extend over 8 weeks. Producers are optimistic, fruits harvested this year are of very good quality, due to particularly favorable weather conditions.
Producers consider to export 17,000 tons of litchis this season. The main destinations are European countries (France, Germany, Italy), which receive nearly 90% of shipments.
