Peruvian avocado exports in 2020 totaled 409.022 tons, surpassing the 2019 campaign by 30%. The fruit was destined to 34 international markets, despite complications due to the pandemic, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Peru (MIDAGRI).
31.145.02 hectares, mainly located in the regions of Piura, La Libertad, Ancash, Lambayeque, Lima, Arequipa, Moquegua, Ica, Tacna, Apurímac, Ayacucho, Cusco and Huancavelica, completed the certification, according to SENASA.
Small family producers played a key role in this rise, keeping the fields with very low levels of pests, while SENASA guaranteed compliance with the phytosanitary requirements of importing countries such as the US, Japan, China, South Korea, the EU countries, among others.
Certification process.
Peru has an advanced sanitary and phytosanitary certification system, recognized by several countries that send specialists to audit SENASA systems. The traceability of export fruit is an important point of this method.
The certified fields receive a unique code that is assigned to the producer by SENASA.
It is necessary to maintain the identity of the conformation of each delivery according to its origin throughout the export chain. The shipment has to arrive marked by identification code of the place of production and its referral guide, a document that confirms that the fruit was transferred from the field to the packing plant. To ensure this data, the producer puts his name, signature and ID number.
If the fruit meets the requirements, the shipment is certified for export.
In case of non-compliance, exporters and packers are suspended in accordance with the SENASA standards and directives.
