Cold wave in California, citrus threatened
FJ
Damages are predicted for the production of citrus, but less severe than the last major frosts (1990.1998).
California has just recorded 6 consecutive nights of frost, which will not be without consequence for citrus production. A professional association of producers, California Citrus Mutal, believes that measures deployed have already cost $ 23 million. The producers tried to fight the frost by protecting the trees, wetting the ground, using lights and braziers, by installing huge wind turbines to circulate the hot air.
As to the Association, the damages will be less on the navel orange production than on the production of Mandarin, fruit much less tolerant to cold. The extent of damage will be determined in the coming weeks.
