Switzerland produces only a third of strawberries consumed in the country.
Strawberries harvest have just begun in Switzerland and perspectives are considered to be good.
Professionals indicate a delay of maturity due to a long and cold winter but strawberries fields are in good condition. Peak is expected for the first three weeks of June and production should border 5500 tons.
Strawberries occupy a surface of 425 hectare culture, among which 37 % in oriental Switzerland, 11 % of Valais, 11 % of Romandie and 8 % of central Switzerland.
Third fruit the most produced in the country after apple and pear, Swiss strawberry represents a third of the total consumption, rest is imported.
In 2009, Swiss consumed 20.041 tons of strawberries among which 14.780 tons were imported.
