Fruit & Veg free distribution at school
France

The proposal is of the French Agriculture minister Michel Barnier, who - to face young people’s modest consumption of fruit and vegetables - suggests that these could be freely distributed at schools.
“A 20 years old guy eats 4 times less fruit and vegetables than his parents. This represents a real public health problem”, the minister explained to the daily Le Parisien.
“Five servings of fruit and vegetables per day” is the slogan of the communication campaign which also in France is circulating since various months on towns’ broadsheets, on radio and TV.
However fruit and vegetables is becoming a luxury product for many families: according to Le Parisien a 115 euro monthly budget is needed approximately for a family of two adults and two children. Therefore, around 60% of French families do not eat enough fruit and vegetables.
“For such reason - Mr Barnier explaines - I have decided, together with my colleague the Education minister Xavier Darcos, to launch a programme for the free distribution of seasonable fruit and vegetables at schools already from next year. This also thanks to a partnership with Regional councils”, Mr Barnier concluded.
His idea is to equip schools with automatic machines distributing sliced and ready-to-eat fruit.
