After a complicated year 2020 due to the negative effects of the health crisis, the mango sector in Pakistan
regains optimism with 2 new approvals for its exports.
Prime Minister's Trade Advisor Abdul Razak Dawood announced that Japan has approved a mango processing facility for Pakistan's exports to the Japanese market. This steam heat treatment plant is the only facility in Pakistan equipped to process mangoes in accordance with Japanese government quarantine requirements.
This Japanese approval came days after Australia approved two processing facilities for the export of mangoes from Pakistan to the Australian market.
Another market that has potential: Iran. Iran imported 20,000 tonnes of Pakistani mangoes last year and this volume could increase further. The situation at the borders of Iran and Pakistan is stable and if the customs of the two countries agree on the issuance of licenses for Pakistani trucks carrying mangoes, the volume could increase according to Pakistani professionals.
About 20% of Pakistan's mango exports are by land, about 25% by air and about 55% by sea.
PFVA (Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association) forecasts that this year exports will reach 150,000 tons of mangoes. National mango production is expected to reach 1.8 million tonnes.
