Decline in value of avocado and mango exports from Peru in the first half of 2022
VU
Avocado exports by Peru decreased from $618 million in the first 6 months of 2021 to $518 million in the same period of this year, according to the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP).
However, the volume of shipments remained the same and went from 303.955 tons to 307.173 in the same term.
The decline in income is linked to the low price of the product in Europe due to the high production of Mexico, South Africa and Spain. This, added to the decrease in shipments to Asia due to China’s logistical problems and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, pushed the price of avocados to drop 17% by June 2022.
Avocado is not the only crop whose price dropped in the same period. Mango shipments decreased from $228 million in June 2021 to $208 million in the same month of 2022. The export volume also fell from 182.697 tons in 2021 to 169.112 tons in 2022.
In addition, the negative trends are observed in exports of tangerines, organic bananas, onions, asparagus and peas.
On the other hand, blueberry exports rose from $67 million in 2021 to $147 in the same lapse of 2022, while sales volume more than doubled to 25.333 tons.
The rise is due to the introduction of varieties with high production and low cost per kilo in fertilization and labor, according to AGAP.
From January to June 2022, grape shipments also grew to $600 million, and the volume exported exceeded 240.000 tons.
