Chile removes September from peak electricity charging period

Chile will exclude September 2026 from the electricity peak-demand control period, reducing the impact of peak-hour charges on companies and SMEs, according to the Ministry of Energy.

Under the existing system, peak-demand control normally applies between April and September, with electricity use monitored from 18:00 to 22:00. A company’s demand during these hours is used in calculating additional power charges.

With September removed this year, electricity consumed during those hours in the month will not be included in the peak-period calculation.

The Ministry said the change followed requests from industrial and other productive-sector associations concerned about the effect of the system on operating costs. Some companies had reduced production or reorganized shifts to avoid higher electricity charges.

The measure is aimed at giving businesses more flexibility to operate during evening hours while lowering energy-related costs and supporting investment and production.
