First early French melons arrive from Guadeloupe and Martinique, marketed by Boyer SAS

The first French melons of the season are arriving from Guadeloupe and Martinique. Marketed exclusively by Boyer SAS, these volumes will be available for around two months, before mainland French production enters the market.

Each year, the first shipments from France’s overseas territories mark the opening of the melon marketing calendar in France. This year again, Boyer SAS, operating under the PHILIBON brand, has launched the marketing of melons originating from Guadeloupe and Martinique.

These first volumes traditionally arrive on the market several weeks before mainland production begins and provide wholesalers and distributors with the first French-origin melons of the year.

For buyers, these early arrivals often represent the first opportunity to source French-origin melons at the start of the season.

A historic player in overseas production

Discussions also highlighted the situation of the Victoria pineapple sector in La Réunion, which is currently facing increasing pressure from pests, notably mealybugs and ants. These pests can subsequently lead to the development of plant diseases and affect yields.

The absence of authorised treatment solutions is creating growing challenges for producers and raising concerns about the long-term economic balance of this emblematic production.

With the arrival of the first shipments on the market, the campaign from Guadeloupe and Martinique once again highlights the role of France’s overseas territories in the seasonal supply calendar of the fruit and vegetable sector.
