New consolidation in maritime transport which is facing the slowdown in the growth of world trade.
The world leader in container shipping has concluded an agreement to take over the No. 7, the German company Hamburg Süd, which specializes in container transport on North-South routes.
Hamburg Süd operates 130 vessels with a capacity of 625,000 TEU, manages more than 250 offices worldwide and has 5,960 employees.
"The acquisition of Hamburg Süd is in line with our growth strategy and will increase the activity of both Maersk Line and APM Terminals," said Søren Skou, CEO of Maersk Line and the Maersk Group. Maersk is already heading 611 ships, this operation will increase its share in global capacity from 15.7% to 18.6%.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and Maersk Line expects to close the transaction by the end of 2017.
