India will facilitate imports of onions to combat price surge.
In the markets of Delhi, the arrivals of tomatoes and especially of onions these last days leave hopen for the end of rising prices. In addition to strengthening supply, the government will facilitate imports from Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey and Iran.
According to ministerial data, in recent days, the largest vegetable market in the Indian capital received 3 times more tomatoes and onions than the daily average recorded a few weeks ago.
Domestic supply was impacted by heavy rains that affected the major onion-producing states such as Maharasthra. The Kharif harvest, or monsoon harvest, is still under way in several states.
To strengthen supply, the government has announced the easing of standards to facilitate imports of onions from Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey and Iran.
