In Kenya, 2020 is proving to be a satisfactory year for agricultural exports. While initially the pandemic had seriously affected shipments, then, strong demand from European markets allowed to record a turnover which is higher than the previous year.
According to data from the Horticulture Directory, the country's agricultural export revenues in 2020 reached KES 148 billion ($ 1.34 billion) compared to KES 143 billion ($ 1.30 billion) in 2019.
This increase in export revenues was achieved despite a 15% drop in the volumes of flowers shipped and a 13% drop in the volumes of vegetables shipped. Mainly thanks to the fruit segment. Strong demand in Europe, the main market for Kenyan fresh produce, succeeded in offsetting the drop in volumes.
In Kenya, the horticultural sector is one of the main contributors to the national economy and exports with 3 major products: tea, horticultural products and coffee.
