Previously, China imported up to 600 tons of lychees from Australia annually but all exports ceased when China became a member of the World Trade Organisation in 2001.
However, an information exchange with South China University researchers studying lychee harvesting technology could open the way for a reintroduction of exports.
The Australian Lychee Growers Association is now working with Biosecurity Australia to obtain a pest list from the Chinese Government and to determine relevant quarantine protocols.
