Ecuador's banana exports see slight growth despite production challenges

Increased exports to the EU offset production losses and reduced sales to Russia.
Ecuador exported 274.39 million boxes of bananas from January to August 2024, marking a 0.5% rise compared to the previous year, as reported by Acorbanec.
The main export markets are the European Union, Russia, the Middle East, and the United States.
However, adverse weather reduced production by 15% from January to September. Temperature changes, high solar radiation, and heavy rainfall affected plantations, leading to lower yields from May to September than in the year’s first four months, despite increased bagging.
Sales to Russia dropped due to high prices and economic issues tied to the war in Ukraine, though a 1.64% rise in exports to the EU helped offset this, as Europe prioritized Ecuadorian bananas over Colombian and Central American supplies amid their production issues.
