In Israel, pineapple sales have soared as a result of lower prices following the abolition of customs duties and the authorisation of imports from Costa Rica.
The local media are reporting a spectacular increase in pineapple consumption, which has become more affordable for consumers. Israelis bought 1.1 million pineapples in 2021, then 1.4 million pineapples in 2022, and 1.9 million pineapples in 2023. That's an increase of 72.7% in 2 years.
This spectacular increase is attributed to lower prices. According to data from Storenext and the Israeli Tax Authority, the price for 1 pineapple was ILS 37.68 (EUR 10.18) in the last quarter of 2021. The current price for 1 pineapple is ILS 18.49 (USD 4.99).
The drop in price is the result of 2 events that took place in 2022: the abolition of customs duties on imported pineapples and the agreement reached with Costa Rica allowing Costa Rican pineapples to be imported into Israel.
