Residents rushed to stock up on essentials, triggering a wave of panic buying in supermarkets.
Hong Kong braced for Typhoon Wipha on July 20, as the Observatory raised the Gale or Storm Signal No. 9, warning that conditions could worsen to a Hurricane Signal No. 10. Strong winds and heavy rainfall were forecast, prompting widespread public preparations across the city.
Supermarkets experienced a wave of panic buying as residents rushed to stock up on essentials. By early evening, shelves were nearly empty, and photos of bare bread racks and overflowing shopping baskets circulated widely on social media.
Among the emptied shelves, one item stood out — celery. Social media users shared footage showing the vegetable section cleared out, with the exception of stacks of untouched, neatly packaged celery.
