German banana ripener adopts Catalytic Generators to improve quality and reliability
Catalytic Generators’ systems are already used worldwide, including at major distribution centers and retailers in North America and Australia.
Fruchtimport vanWylick GmbH, one of Europe’s largest banana ripening companies, has introduced Catalytic Generators’ Easy-Ripe® systems across its facilities in Germany. The company says the technology makes the ripening process safer, more flexible, and easier to manage compared to traditional centralized gas systems.
Ethylene is a natural gas used to ripen bananas and other fruits. Controlling its release is key to ensuring fruit reaches stores at the right stage. According to vanWylick, the Easy-Ripe® generators help maintain a stable ripening environment without interruptions, lowering the risk of delays or spoiled fruit.
Simon Goisser, Head of CSR and the company’s internal “Ripening Academy,” explained that the generators offer an advantage when equipment failures occur in conventional systems. “If a valve fails in a centralized setup, the gas cylinders can be empty by the next morning. That leads to lost time and money. With catalytic generators, the risk is far smaller,” he said.
Goisser also highlighted the technology’s flexibility. Generators can be added room by room, making it easier and cheaper to expand ripening capacity compared to installing new piping and fittings for large gas systems. This makes the solution suitable not only for small operations but also for high-volume ripeners. VanWylick, which ripens more than 230,000 boxes of bananas each week, uses the generators as part of its large-scale operations.
Catalytic Generators’ systems are already in use worldwide, including at Walmart distribution centers in North America and major retailers such as Coles and Woolworths in Australia.
