Area planted with tomatoes in Mendoza increase 29.5%

The area planted with tomatoes in Mendoza (Argentina) increased 29.5% in the last year, according to a recent report by the Ministry of Economy and Energy through the Rural Development Institute.
Currently, the province has 3.757 hectares planted with this fruit. Mendoza and the neighboring province of San Juan concentrate more than 80% of the total tomato production in the country. The rest of the surface is distributed between Corrientes and Formosa (NEA region), Salta and Jujuy (NOA), Río Negro and Buenos Aires.
92% of Mendoza’s tomato production is destined for industry. This is the third most cultivated species in the province (20% of total), after the potato (27%) and pumpkin (24%).
The area with the highest production is the Valle de Uco, specifically the department of Tunuyán, with some 710 hectares; followed by San Martín (660 ha), Lavalle (587 ha), San Carlos (418 ha) and Maipú (388 ha).
