According to figures released by the President of the Chamber of Agriculture of Nigde, which is the largest apple growing region of Turkey, the apple harvest grew from 288 000 tonnes last year to 415 000 tonnes.
The freeze had been responsible for the decline in production in 2014.
Amajor modernization of cultivation techniques is observed in recent years with varieties of smaller trees, thus easier to harvest and modern horticultural techniques.
The red color and typical flavor of apples produced in Nigde make a particular product.11 000 decares are dedicated to organic cultivation of apple. The expected production will be around 20,000 tonnes, of which the vast majority will go towards exports with excellent prices.
The apple is on the 4th row of the exported fruit after grapes, cherry and pomegranate (export figures for January-October 2015) with 125 000 tonnes of exported fruits. In October 2015, exports increased by 72% in quantity.
