Colombia exports his first container of Avocado Hass to Japan
The first container of Colombia avocado to Japan was load from the packaging house of Cartama, based in Pereira, Risaralda until the port of Buenaventura where was shipped in November 7th with destination to the port of Yokohama, Japan and will be arrived after 24 days. In accordance with the manager of Cartama, Ricardo Uribe, “This exportation is an effort of the entire avocado industry from the country and the different governmental entities to gain access to new markets, two years ago we achieved it by reaching the American market and now the Asian one”.
The Japanese market is constantly rising, with importations in avocado hass of 74.096 tons in 2018, with an increase of 22% in comparison with the last year. Colombia is now competing with Mexico, Peru, and others. The Japanese market has an average consume of 0,5kg per cápita and a population of 127 millions of people. It means a huge opportunity for the Colombian Avocado, to diversify the exportations and to bring a new Colombian product to the Asian Market.
This first exportations is done by Cartama and his partner Mission Produce, the main grower and distributor of avocado worldwide. Also, organizations like the Presidency of the Republic, Corpohass (Corporación de Productores y Exportadores de Aguacate Hass de Colombia), the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Foreign Relations and entities such as ICA and Procolombia.
Now Colombia is preparing itself to open Chinese Markets where the challenges have been increasing in phytosanitary and post harvest terms. Ricardo Uribe said that “We are making use of all possible post harvest alternatives to guarantee the good arrival of this fruit such as the application of substances to prevent diseases, use of ethylene filters inside the container which is modified atmosphere, temperature control and a harvest in field with the appropriate percentage of dry matter”.
