Fewer seasonal workers this year for apple crops (Photo: youtube apple picking nz).
In New Zealand, as in other fruit and vegetable producing countries, the agricultural sector is struggling to find seasonal workers for the crops.
As in other countries, restrictive travel measures have been introduced in New Zealand. The agricultural sector is struggling to find the workers needed for the crops. The usual seasonal workers were unable to enter the country.
Apple growers are concerned. Even with the use of local labor, from other sectors and less qualified for this work, losses are to be expected. Without workers to pick them, perhaps 10% of the apples cannot be harvested according to some estimates.
