More than 200 producers in the areas of Cúllar, Baza and Caniles, in the province of Granada, have expressed their concern about the use of ultrasonic anti-hail cannons by a Spanish company, which is involved in the cultivation of vegetables. According to complaints lodged with Asaja Granada, it is feared that this technology will affect local rainfall, endangering almond, pistachio and cereal crops and compromising the water and pasture needed for livestock.
There is no specific law directly regulating the use of these canyons, but farmers argue that they should be subject to certain environmental laws. They argue that any artificial alteration of atmospheric conditions requires authorisation as established by Royal Decree 849/1986 and the Texto Refundido de la Ley de Aguas.
Faced with this problem, Asaja Granada has asked the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir for clarification as to whether there is official authorisation for the company to use these devices. The agricultural association emphasises the importance of investigating the potential impacts of such technologies on rainfall, especially considering the current severe drought situation, and urges the authorities to consider the general welfare over business profits to ensure the sustainability of the environment and the farming community.
