Advanced methods help farmers earn more from their harvests.
Durian farmers in Vietnam are making big profits thanks to better harvests and higher market prices. A grower from Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta earned over $41,000, crediting modern farming techniques like regular fertilization, natural pest control, and automated drip irrigation for improving both yield and quality.
A farmer from Dong Thap Province saw similar success on his 1.2-hectare durian farm by using advanced methods. Nguyen Van Man, head of Tien Giang’s agriculture department, shared that one hectare of durian can bring in around $69,500 per year. This high income has encouraged more farmers in the region to switch to durian cultivation.
Vu Duc Con, president of the Dak Lak Durian Association, noted that durian farming has boosted incomes for many families, with some earning between $12,200 and $20,400 annually. Dak Lak, a key durian-growing province, has about 33,000 hectares of durian plantations, producing 350,000 tons each year.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that the country’s agricultural, forestry, and fishery exports reached $62.4 billion last year. Fruits and vegetables led the way with $7.2 billion, and durian alone accounted for $3.3 billion. This growth is driven by improved farming and storage technologies, as well as strong cooperation between farmers, exporters, and the government.
