Great opportunities open up for Peruvian exporters of paprika
VU
A great chance opens up for Peruvian paprika exporters who seek to enter new global markets. This opportunity comes from the problems with residues and pollutants (especially pesticides) that faced China, the world's leading supplier of this veg.
The Capsicum Committee of the Association of Exporters of Peru (ADEX) offers to incorporate into its agenda a strategy to promote paprika in different destinations, thus taking advantage of the benefit caused by the situation in China. In addition, it is planned to reactivate the Capsicum Sustainable Development Plan, led by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), to advance with the promotion of the foods that make up this category.
Promotion would be the main means to advance the growth projections that the capsicum sector has so far for 2021. Based on the development trends of the sector in recent years, the committee estimates that capsicum exports would increase 0.71% in value and -2% in volume at the end of 2021.
From the Committee it is expected that this will not happen and, on the contrary, a positive variation will be achieved. This is why it is important to support exporters by promoting Peruvian capsicum in different nations by the government and the private sector.
According to value, the leading export products and with the most participation in the basket are paprika, bell pepper, piquillo pepper and jalapeño, which are mainly shipped canned and dried. By the end of 2021, they estimate that shipments abroad of paprika will increase 13%, by 10% for jalapeño and by 38% for other peppers (species not indicated).
The projections for piquillo and bell peppers have downward trends of 29% and 33%. In this regard, the union recalled that this negative trend was already appreciated in recent years, since piquillo pepper deliveries fell in 2018 (-55%) and 2019 (-11%), while bell pepper experienced a contraction since 2019.
