The volume of onions imported by Nepal recorded a huge decline during the first 6 months of the current fiscal year (16 July 2023-15 July 2024).
Local media report that according to Customs Department figures for the first 6 months of the current fiscal year, Nepal imported 46,592 tonnes of onions, down 46.07% on the 86,386 tonnes imported during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Nepal imports mainly Indian onions. But the various measures taken by India (a 40% customs duty on onion exports, followed by a ban on exports) have had a major impact on the Nepalese onion market, with prices soaring.
Now that the onion harvest has begun in India, Nepalese professionals are hoping that the export ban will soon be lifted and that prices will return to normal.
Nepal imported 180,190 tonnes of onions from India in the previous fiscal year.
