The lack of rain during winter has led to an exceptional drought in Europe, particularly Spain, Portugal, France and part of the UK.
An exceptional drought, not seen in more than half a century, has hit several European countries.
The agriculture ministers in Brussels have studied the the payment of subsidies to farmers to fight against the impacts of the drought. If the situation requires, payments will be made mid-October rather than the end of the year.
Drought has hit Europe this winter and in France, the winter
was the driest since 1959 with the level of rainfall under a quarter of the usual average. In Spain, Portugal and the south of the United Kingdom, the winter was the driest for over half a century and many parts are on drought alert.
The few areas that have experienced above average rainfall are southern Italy and Greece.
