Spain's organic sector seeks to increase domestic consumption while strengthening its presence on the European market
Spain has managed to position itself within the top ten markets for organic products globally, with a value of 3,000 million euros in 2023, says a local media. This progress places the country among the big players in the sector, behind economies such as the United States, Germany and France, representing 5.7% of the European market. It is estimated that this market will grow between 6% and 7% annually in the coming years.
In 2023, per capita spending by Spaniards on organic products was 64 euros, a figure lower than that of countries like Switzerland or France. Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid lead the consumption, with 69% of the volume concentrated in products of plant origin. Although the price increase in organic products has been lower than in conventional ones, the challenge remains to increase domestic consumption, which barely reaches 3% of the total in Spain.
It is also noted that more than 10% of the country's agricultural production is organic, although a large part is destined for export. Increasing domestic consumption is key to the future growth of the sector.
