The greater demand for Peruvian chili peppers is driven by the promotion of Peruvian gastronomy in the world: more restaurants and colonies of compatriots abroad.

Peruvian chili pepper exports exceeded $ 4,021,000 in the first semester of 2021, which represents an increase of 24%, compared to the same period of the previous year ($ 3,399,000), according to the Agroexport Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

The most exported variety was the yellow pepper ($ 2,067,000), representing 51% of the total; followed by rocoto ($ 1,072,000), ají panca ($ 583,804), ají limo ($ 166,471) and ají mirasol ($ 131,903).

The greater demand for Peruvian chili peppers is driven by the promotion of Peruvian gastronomy in the world: more restaurants and colonies of compatriots abroad.

The main destination of these supplies was the United States ($ 2,125,000), representing 52.9% of the total and an increase of 43%.

Other destinations: Spain ($ 960,054), although it suffered a decrease of -8%, Italy with $ 273,840 (196%), Japan with $ 155,535 (-8%), Chile with $ 110,365 (-47%), Canada with $ 71,938 (78%) , Belgium with $ 44,764 (36%), France with $ 32,669 (42%) and the Netherlands with $ 24,365 (-49%).

According to the president of the ADEX Capsicum Committee, Walter Seras, in order to maintain the growing trend, the actors in the production chain, particularly small producers, need to have appropriate technology.

He pointed out that the private sector is making important efforts, but with more support from the Government in terms of financing, training and attracting more buyers, the good behavior will be maintained in the long term.

In the promotional campaign, Seras suggests emphasizing the organoleptic characteristics of Peruvian chili peppers (flavor, color, texture and fragrance) in order to reach more markets.

Seras stressed that together with the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PromPerú), they seek to crystallize a brand. In addition, together with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), they want to reactivate the "Sustainable development plan for capsicum 2018 - 2028", in favor of peppers and chili peppers.
