In China, football fans, estimated at around 200 million, are closely following the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The event causes a surge in consumption.
With the rising standard of living in the country, more football fans were willing to pay to enjoy the matches of this 2022 World Cup. Several sectors have benefited from this enthusiasm from spendthrift consumers to increase their sales: products food and drink, fast food, e-commerce, televisions and even hotels.
According to Hema, a fresh produce retailer, order volume increased by more than 40% in the first 2 weeks of the World Cup. According to Meitan, an online food specialist, drinks orders were up 25% from the previous month. An e-commerce specialist has extended opening hours to cater to fans who stay up late to watch games.
Sales of TVs and cell phones increased 252% year-on-year, with sales of TV remotes increasing nearly 8 times.
