By 2024, the Colombian banana sector is optimistic, projecting significant growth. This is attributed to compliance with the demanding environmental, social and labor sustainability requirements established by the European Union.
Although the first half saw a decline of around 25% in banana exports, the second half has seen a significant recovery, positioning the sector in a more encouraging outlook compared to other producing countries.
Despite maintaining a 15% reduction in volume, this loss has been compensated through price adjustments. The recovery in production during the second semester, especially in the Urabá area, has allowed a greater supply to the market.
However, challenges persist due to adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds in the Magdalena area and excessive rains in Urabá and Magdalena. The goal of recovering export volumes in 2022 remains a significant challenge.
In 2022, more than 111 million boxes of bananas were exported, and the hope is to maintain or even exceed this figure this year.
Despite concerns about the possible impact of the El Niño phenomenon, sector leaders are confident of mitigating its effects. Measures to support producers are being implemented, such as soil studies through Cenibanano, and marketers are providing lines of credit to improve fertilization practices, seeking to guarantee a productive first semester in 2024.
