Vegetable production grows

Romania reported a 11% increase in production of vegetables this year.

The Minister of Agriculture reports that Romanian vegetable production is up this year and a slight decrease in fruit production.

Vegetable production could reach 3.490 million tons this year, up 11% compared to 2010 due to favourable weather conditions.

During the first quarter, 81 073 tons of tomatoes had been collected while production in 2010 reached 68,584 tons. For white cabbages 89,821 tons have already been harvested, compared to 76,990 tons produced last year.

For fruits, the estimated harvest amounted to 1.385 million tons this year, slightly down compared to 1.394 million tons produced in 2010.

According to the ministry, Romania imported 242,775 tons of fruit and vegetables and exported 11,574.5 tons in the first 5 months of the year. Russia, Ukraine and Moldova have been its main export markets.
