Taiwan has registered a new variety of pineapple for intellectual property protection in the Japanese market, which has become the main destination for its pineapple exports.
TARI (Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute) announced that it has registered with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture a new variety of pineapple which was developed in 2019. The new cultivar, named Tainung No.23, was developed by the station of agricultural experimentation of Chiayi, known for introducing the original Tainung No. 1 in 1934 and subsequently 18 different varieties of pineapple.
Tainung No.23, according to TARI, has a mango scent, a delicate taste and no visible fiber. This variety has a long shelf life, which makes it perfectly suitable for export.
This registration concerns the protection of intellectual property in the Japanese market. Temporary protection has been granted to the new variety of pineapple. The Japanese authorities, after further consideration, should grant full legal protection.
In 2021 Taiwan exported 28,664 tons of pineapples in total. About 17,850 tons, or 62.3% of the total, were exported to Japan. Japan has become the main destination for Taiwanese pineapple exports according to COA (Council of Agriculture).
